Facts You Must Know
No two people have the same reaction to bed bugs, making it difficult to properly identify them.
Some people do not get bed bug rashes, no matter how many times they are bitten.
This makes those people think that they are not being bitten. No one is immune to being bit by a bed bug!
Without actually finding bed bugs, it is almost impossible to know if bed bugs caused your rash.
If you only have a rash, but no signs of bed bugs, then you CANNOT assume you have them. The rash could be caused by any number of triggers.
If you are stumped about whether or not you have these bloodsuckers, you can always call a professional for a consultation.
I have a lot of requests for pictures of bed bites on kids. You can seem them by following one of these links.
More bed bite pictures can be found at Pictures of Bed Bug Bites on Kids and Mosquito Bite Pictures Versus Bed Bug Bites.
It is essential to look at as many pictures as possible because not all bed bug rashes look the same.
Rashes, as seen in these pictures, are one sign (remember to look for the other signs) of bed bugs.
Other signs of bed bugs is feces. Lift bedding and linens and check all areas of the mattress for dark brown spots, which are the feces.
If you do not plan to use the free bed bug plan checklist , or other do it yourself options, call a professional, such as Terminix or Orkin.
If you are in the UK, I highly suggest you get your advice about extermination from David Cain. He is the best bed bug expert in the UK, and has some of the most accurate information out there.
Humans undergo a lot of stress because of bed bugs; however, there is no proof that they spread diseases.
Stress is an interesting factor; some people actually experience old bed bug bites reappearing from a stress reaction.
I have seen claims that bed bugs spread MRSA and other serious diseases.
These reports are under investigation by scientists who are not willing to verify the claims.
When you press on a MRSA rash, you will often feel a bump underneath it.
Bed bugs are also mistaken for ringworm, which is not surprising because they can both make a perfect circle rash.
If something you see here looks familiar, it is time to take action before it is too late.
By take action, I mean look for signs of bed bugs, get educated on the subject, and if you are unsure, call a professional.
Either way, if you have itchy, painful bed bug bites it you must act now! Delaying action could allow bed bugs to multiply in to the thousands.
That might sound impossible, but it is very possible to to have thousands, maybe even millions of bed bugs. The rashes will be worse every time you get bit, and with that many you will not be able to sleep a wink.
If a bed bug infestation is minor, then you will never notice them biting you. With more severe infestations they might be trying to crawl all over you at all hours of the night.
Why Bed Bug Bites Come in Groups of Three
Out of all of the pictures, this one is the best example of a three course meal.
If you were to count each red circle you would count nine red circles, each group of three is made by a separate bed bug.
Bed bug bites come in groups of three because because bed bugs take two breaks while feeding.
Each red circle represents a bite, in between the bug moves and starts again.
Bed bugs attack the first area of flesh they discover. Usually, the bites are found on the upper torso and face.
This is because they are attracted to the carbon dioxide that you breathe out. This is one of the ways they locate their victims.
The picture to the right is a person’s upper arm. The first thing that you will notice about the bites is that they are perfect circles.
Not all bed bug bites show up as perfect circles, which can confuse things. The more bed bugs you are bit by in any given area, the less likely you are to see perfect circles.
When bitten by a few bed bugs the rashes are flat, but when experimenters have allowed themselves to be bitten by hundreds of them in one area they got huge welts.
As mentioned, bed bug rashes are flat. The exception to the rule is if you have a serious allergy or if you are being bitten many times.
Letting a Bed Bug Infestation Get Out of Control
The next two pictures were taken of a 32-year-old woman who let her problem go to long.
It is likely this woman was bitten by at least 15-20 bugs, and that is just one area of her body!
When you see bites in such great numbers, it is time to get serious about your bed bugs.
If you do not have a lot of extra time to invest, call a professional.
If you don’t have a lot of money to spend, look in to do it yourself options.
The important thing at this point is: do not put it off any longer.
This can not be stressed enough. These irritating insects multiply at an alarming rate.
If nothing is done at this point, then there is a serious threat that the infestation may become greater than one person can handle.
This woman said the itching was more than she could handle.
She ended up seeing a doctor and getting help with her bed bug problem.
The doctor prescribed her with steroid cream, which she said helped a great deal.
The general rule of thumb is, the worse the rash the worse the infestation.
Bed bugs are attracted to the CO2 you breath, which makes bites more common in the upper torso and face.
However, if you have thousands or millions of bed bugs, they will bite your entire body.
Same Woman, Same Night, Different Part of the Body
This type of reaction would be classified as a severe allergic reaction.
Bed bug bites are not dangerous, but she said her itching can be unbearable at times.
If you are bitten by too many bed bugs, your reactions may worsen and become severe enough to require medical care.
In this picture, you can no longer differentiate between bites because she has been bitten so many times.
Bed bugs do not feed every night. When they do feed, they eat once during that night and bite up to three times.
This takes around ten minutes of uninterrupted time. They attack at a time which happens to be when humans are in their deepest sleep state.
Bed Bug Bites can be Splotchy
In this picture, you see what looks like two red splotches. Bed bug bites are red and flush with the skin.
When you run your finger over this type of rash you will not feel a bump unless a person has scratched it enough to open the skin and cause it to raise.
Some people say you can see a mark in the center of the rash, like a mosquito bite, but this is seldom true. If there is an opening in the center, it is due to scratching.
The bites in this image were likely caused by two separate bugs who were interrupted in their blood meal.
If there is a bite mark in the center (without scratching), you may have a flea bite or a mosquito bite.
Comparing bed bug bites and mosquito bites is pretty simple, because mosquito bites rise above the skin and often turn whitish.
Telling the difference between a bed bug bite and a flea bite is a little more tricky.
Bed bugs do not cause bites that fill with puss, or any other kind of liquid. The only exception is an infected bite.
Bites with raised, fluid filled centers might be poison ivy, oak or sumac. They could be a burn or some time of viral rash but are most likely not bed bug bites.
Compications in Identifying Bed Bug Rashes
A bed bug bite may look like one rash, not three bites. However, it may simply be three separate bites.
Each bite overlapping the other. All three are made by the same bloodsucker.
The size and color of the rash is determined by the person’s natural allergic reaction and size/age of the bug.
Bed Bug Bites and Kids
It is important to see how bites look on children. This image is of a 10-year-old boy. This picture is of bed bug bites on the child’s back and right arm.
This reaction is askew. It looks more like a common rash than like a bed bug bite. The mother reports that the boy sleeps without a shirt and on his side or stomach.
The skin on the back and arm are exposed, so it was the perfect way to feast. This child reported severe itching with these bites, which is not uncommon.
While there is still a great deal unknown about bed bug bites, there could be a correlation between the shape of the rash and the amount it is scratched.
This could mean rashes that are scratches soon after the bite may have less defined edges and look more splotchy.
More About Bed Bugs and Kids
This is another picture of bites on a child. This child had a slightly different reaction and is probably scratching less.
This 7-year-old boy is also known to sleep with his shirt off. To prevent bites it is important to cover as much of your body as possible.
However, this might drive the bugs to bite places they usually wouldn’t feast. This could mean a greater chance of visible rashes on the neck, face and hands.
It can be incredibly embarrassing to leave the house with visible bed bug bites. Which is way some people recommend sleeping with the arms and/or torso uncovered.
If you see bites like these wash the linens as soon as possible and look in to your extermination options. If you have an infant, you may want to search for other bed bug bite pictures of children.
Since infants are mostly immobile, they tend to be attacked and bitten more than any other family member. If you have an infant or young children, it is essential that you let a professional handle things.
Stop the Torture of a Bed Bug Rash
Bites from bed bugs can vary in shape, size and color. They often come in groups of three but may only come one bite at a time.
I want to thank the volunteers who allowed me to take these pictures. If you find rashes like these on yourself, or a child, it is important to do a full inspection and to begin the process of ridding yourself of these miniature monsters.
I mentioned a secondary rash at the beginning of this hub. The secondary rash is very difficult to photograph but is almost always accompanied by the primary rash.
Bed bug rashes do not usually blister and will be an even color. If your rash is blistering or is white in the center, you may have a different kind of rash or an infected bite.
The secondary rash is made up of lots and lots of tiny little bumps, about the size of a pen tip. The center might have a tiny blistering looking center.
They may be red or white. Some people report that they look like scabies. If your rash sounds like this, you may wish to see a doctor because scabies needs to be treated by a professional.
I hope these pictures help you to identify, or rule out, bed bugs as the cause of your rash. If your rash is caused by bed bugs, do not panic.

How Long Does It Take for Bed Bug Bites to go Away?
Each humans allergic reactions are different. The length of time it takes for a bed bug bite to go away depends upon the the individual.
The picture to the right has one bite. However, 24 hours before this picture was taken there were 15 bites.
That means five bed bugs feasted on this arm. It took about 3 hours to gain the rash. About 24 hours after the rash disappeared only one bite remains.
The woman did not use cortisone cream. Instead, she used baby lotion.
Other people may use cortisone cream and have no reduction in redness. Remember, the way each person reacts to bed bug bites will vary upon their natural defenses and immune system.
I have seen other people still have bites 3 or 4 days after the attack, plus get new ones! I have also seen people scratch their bites, open the wound and have them for weeks.
The best way to shorten the appearance of a bed bug bit is to use some type of cortisone cream after washing with soap and water.
Moisturize your skin often, to help your body naturally repair the wound quicker.
How to Stop Itching of a Bed Bug Rash
While some people’s bites cause them no discomfort, other people experience extreme discomfort an itching.
If you are experiencing itching, first wash the bite with soap and water. You can ice to bring down the swelling and reduce redness.
The best to go to your doctor and get prescription hydrocortisone cream. If you do not wish to go that route then purchase this cream, or one like it.
Cortizone-10 Max Strength is as close as you are going to get to prescription strength hydrocortisone. If you have bed bugs you should buy this in bulk, or go to your doctor and get prescription strength. This is one of the best products to stop itching from bedbug bites. It will also help reduce the redness, but will not make the bites vanish.
